Foi em 1935 que Armand Petitjean lançou a marca com o seu nome bem francês "Lancôme". Para começar, a marca dedica-se aos perfumes com o lançamento de 5 produtos durante a Exposição Universal de Bruxelas. Armand Petitjean escolhe como emblemas a rosa (para o perfume), o querubim (para a maquilhagem) e a flor de lótus (para o cuidado). A marca Lancôme teria a origem de seu nome em Lancosme, um castelo localizado no Indre na região central.

Em 1961, Armand Petitjean fils substituiu seu pai e continuou a desenvolver a marca por um período muito curto, uma vez que vendeu Lancôme para a L'Oréal em 1964. Desde 1964, Lancôme faz parte do grupo L'Oréal dentro da Divisão de Produtos de Luxo. A gigante dos cosméticos fez da marca seu emblema principal e a imagem de uma certa beldade francesa.
Ao longo dos anos, a marca lançou muitos produtos e cuidados para a pele na vanguarda da inovação científica, produtos para a pele que se tornaram indispensáveis ??como Advanced Génifique ou Absolue L’Extrait. What's in a Gloss?

Formulas have evolved a lot since the days when all you needed was a mix of shiny synthetic oils (because natural oils are absorbed by the lips), a hint of adhesive and texturizing agents, and a touch of pigments (1%). Much work has been done to achieve the best possible spread and flexibility on the lips but also to extend retention and limit the sticky effect. "We use thermoplastic polymers that react to the temperature of the lips and their movements," explains Sylvie Guichard from L'Oréal.

The effect: a "self-smoothing" texture (even if you bite your lips, they will smooth themselves out). Other techniques also work very well, such as the use of a gelling agent with a "cushion" effect, which fluidizes the contact with the lips and offers a rather smooth texture. And, to obtain well-pigmented formulas, "oil creams" have been developed, in which you can put four times more pigments than in a "classic" gloss. "All this is added to the meticulous work of foam applicators, whose shape, flexibility, and absorption dosage determine the correct spread," emphasizes Sylvie Guichard.
