How to Treat Dry Baby Skin?

If your child has rough, less flexible than normal, scaly, or sensitive skin.

What is Dry Skin?

A child's skin is naturally protected by a thin layer of fat and water. In newborns, this protective layer is sometimes renewed less rapidly than in an older child because their sebaceous glands are immature.
Therefore, instead of being soft and silky, a baby's skin may appear rough and even peel. Even an older child can have dry skin due to various factors. Heredity plays a significant role in the development of eczema and dry skin, which can occur at any age. External factors causing skin dryness include prolonged swimming, exposure to sunlight, wind or cold temperatures in winter, living in a very warm and dry house in winter, etc. Some children have more sensitive skin and need more attention.
If your child's skin is not sufficiently hydrated, they may experience discomfort. If their skin is cracked or very itchy, they may develop dermatitis, which can sometimes become infected (impetigo).

Children of all ages, especially newborns, can have dry skin.

How to Treat?

In the absence of skin infection or severe inflammation, dry skin does not require medical treatment. Simple moisturizers can alleviate your child's skin.

Practical Care and Advice

Dry skin is generally not a sign of illness. Thicker products, such as cream or ointment, are better for children with fragile or eczematous skin. Applying specific products to dry spots creates a good barrier to keep the skin hydrated.

Simple Care Can Correct the Situation:

•    Baths or showers. It's not necessary to bathe every day; you can wash them with a damp cloth in warm water between baths.
•    Limit the duration of baths or showers to fifteen minutes or less.
•    Avoid hot baths: prefer warm or slightly cool, but comfortable water.
•    Choose a mild, unscented soap containing fatty substances or a moisturizer (e.g., glycerin, lanolin, coconut, or almond oil). Avoid antibacterial soaps containing alcohol. Also, avoid soaps with sodium lauryl sulfate, an agent that dissolves natural skin fats.
•    Pat your child's skin dry quickly with a towel instead of rubbing it.
•    Apply a fragrance-free moisturizer to the skin while it's still wet. Massage the skin to help it penetrate well.
•    Prefer creams to lotions because their protective action lasts longer. On the other hand, lotions usually spread better and penetrate more easily. If your child doesn't have a significant skin problem but is developing one, try a moisturizing lotion.
•    To avoid allergic reactions, avoid soaps, creams, and lotions containing methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone. When these 2 preservatives are present in a product, they are grouped under the term Kathon-CG in the ingredient list. Although products labeled as hypoallergenic are less likely to cause an allergic reaction, they are not 100% safe. They can irritate your child's skin.
•    Avoid products containing perfumes and alcohol, as they can irritate the skin.
•    Avoid wet wipes, especially if they are scented or contain alcohol, as they can dry the skin, cause irritation, and even trigger skin allergies.

Can Moisturizers Be Used Long Term?

It is wrong to believe that moisturizers maintain the problem of dry skin. On the contrary, poorly treated and dehydrated skin for a long time leads to more serious problems. Therefore, do not hesitate to moisturize your child's skin daily if it is dry.
However, there is no need to apply cream or lotion every day if your child does not have a dry skin problem. Moisturizers can be used only when necessary.

How to Prevent?

•    Ensure your child drinks enough. However, limit juice consumption to 125 ml per day. Avoid drinks containing caffeine, such as cola or iced tea.
•    Protect the skin from the sun by having them wear light clothes or applying sunscreen to the skin.
•    You can apply cream to your child's face before going out in winter, but cream alone is not enough. Also, protect their face from the cold with a scarf.

Consult a doctor if symptoms worsen with:
•    Redness, pimples, water blisters, spots, or swelling on the skin;
•    Bleeding skin or signs of infection (redness, discharge, pus, soft crusts, pain).
