How to Choose Your Deodorant?

We can say that perspiration is a necessary evil because it regulates body temperature, but it can also be the source of unpleasant odors. Fortunately, deodorants exist. However, based on needs and skin sensitivity, you still need to know how to choose the one that suits you best.
To feel fresh all day, only one solution: impeccable personal hygiene and a bit of deodorant. But amid controversies around aluminum salts and the virtues of Alum stone, we often lose our way.

However, choosing your deodorant is not that complicated. Lesson in four steps:

1) Deodorant or Antiperspirant?

First, you need to differentiate between deodorant and antiperspirant. Because, even though we now find products under the name "deodorant" with two functions, they originally have very distinct roles.
 • Deodorants exist to mask perspiration odors by limiting the proliferation of bacteria responsible for these odors;
• Antiperspirants exist to block and limit perspiration secretion. They act on sweat glands, blocking them and interrupting the perspiration process. However, while they bring real comfort, antiperspirants block a natural process that is useful for maintaining the body temperature at 37°C.
If you suffer from intense perspiration, opt for antiperspirants that will be more effective than simple "odor disguises." However, today we find deodorants on the market that combine two actions: blocking perspiration first and masking bad odors.

2) With or Without Aluminum Salt?

Most deodorants contain aluminum salts because they play an antiperspirant role. A few years ago, a controversy arose regarding the health risks of these salts. However, even though they have been implicated in the onset of breast cancer, no study has been able to categorically prove the link between cancer and aluminum salts.

After the fear of these suspicions, some brands wanted to find an alternative to aluminum salts, mainly acting on the natural side and praising the antiperspirant properties with Alum stone. But manufacturers often forget to specify that this mineral also contains aluminum salt.

3) Stick or Spray, Each Has Its Advantages

Between the stick and the spray, it's all a matter of personal choice. There is still a slight difference: sticks have a much higher concentration of aluminum salts and are therefore more effective than sprays. However, sprays provide a much more intense feeling of freshness than a simple stick.

4) Deodorant, Beware of Skin Intolerance

If you have sensitive skin, be careful with deodorants. They often contain alcohol (perfume and antiseptics) that can dry out or even irritate your epidermis. As proof, it's the very unpleasant sensation we all feel after spraying our freshly shaved armpits! Guaranteed stinging!
In addition, the antibacterials and antiseptics contained in deodorants can be allergenic, as well as essential oils. So, be attentive and, according to your sensitivity, always read the list of compounds to ensure the right product purchase.
